Notes from the history of electricity

Summaries are passed from the earliest issues of our magazine in this section. And the mentioned topics are commented on from the today’s viewpoint.

For example, a paper headlined as “The Future Phone” (issue: Oct. 1982) handles the expectations on future phones. According to this paper, all expectations on the phones are fully realized and even surpassed technologically.

On the other hand due to insufficient quality of electrical energy, houses with TV receivers had to use regulators in Turkey in 1980s. That caused great loss on both end-users and national economy. Electrical energy consumed by those regulators were higher than produced by The Keban Dam.

Compensation at power systems

Asst.Prof Süleyman Adak (suleymanadak@hotmail.com)

Asynchronous motors, transformers, ballasts and similar bobbin-rolled devices get reagent current from the networks to establish their own magnetic fields. Reagent current cables are used to establish magnetic field, which are nonoperating, cause overloading with aerial lines and voltage decrease. “Compensation” is a process that aims to decrease reagent energy at electrical facilities. Power co-efficient is generally low at industrial facilities. Low power co-efficient has many negatives results. Reagent power brings about low power co-efficient. There are three types of compensation: Independent compensation, group compensation and central compensation. At independent compensation, condensers are directly attached to load output. And at group compensation, there are more than one compensation of a motor or fluorescent light’s compensation is realized.

Aischlos mentions about the news on Troy’s fall in Agamemnon’s drama passing a distance in 450 kms in a night. That kind of communication record would broken late 18 and early 19 th centuries. The word “telegraph” was derived from “tele:distant” and “grapgy:to write” in 1793. Until the middle of 19th century, the optic telegraph was in use. In 1838, Steinheil started experiments to use the railways as a telegraph, but failed. In 1837, American Congress held a competition on mechanic optical telegraph. Robinson installed first telegraph in Germany on the order of Hamburger Elektromagnetischen Telgraphen-Compaigne. That telegraph started to operate between Hamburg-Cuxhave on 15 Oct 1848.

On China’s Energy Problems

China’s main priority will become growth for a long time as the country aims to have an economical development. Because the menace of unemployment and underemployment will be unbearable if growth slows down, which is a politically destabilizing issue. If China wants to survive, it surely wants to grow more.

Now the basic condition for here is to implement the reforms on time. China has no other option for their security to reach real solution.

Although many developments have been witnessed, China has no enough power to limit the damages to the environment.

As a result, whatever the resource is under consideration, increase for the energy demand and pollution go higher as in the past.

Harmonics – Prof Jan Desmet, Hogeschool West-Vlaanderen & Prof Angelo Baggini, Universitá di Bergamo

This articles discusses the sizing of neutral conductors in the presence of power quality problems, such as ‘triple-N’- that is, currents with a harmonic order that is a multiple of three current harmonics. This issue is particularly important in low voltage systems where harmonic pollution by single phase loads is an increasingly serious problem. Triple-N harmonic currents add arithmetically in the neutral conductor rather then summing to zero as do balanced fundamental and other harmonic currents. This discussion in this paper has pointed out how common design solutions, valid without power quality problems, become meaningless when theoretical hypotheses upon which they are based are not fulfilled. In this instance, the assumption that voltages and currents have ideal waveforms is not valid.

Energy consumption of electronical ballasts and its effects on environment – Mans Paul – Product Group Manager – Helvar

The importance of energy saving increases day by day in parallel with the climbing up oil and electricity prices. Due to the natural resources are limited, uneasiness appears and it is difficult to decide any base prices for those resources. Lighting includes total 10–15 per cent electricity consumption of the industrialized countries, whereas it is higher in developing countries as there lesser industrial corporations. Due to the use of high frequency electronical ballasts in lighting, it can be saved 20–25 per cent energy. In addition, electronical ballasts operate at lower temperatures and generates more light, in comparison with the magnetic ballasts.

Over voltage in the electrical power systems

In a usual business operation the isolation of electrical operating devices have an almost usual voltage effect. On the other hand, some dangerous voltage increase may be witnessed with the isolation of electrical operating devices, due to different reasons. Over voltage is called that if the voltage is goes higher than the usual rating and becomes dangerous for the isolation level. Over voltage can be categorized in two forms: external over voltage and internal over voltage. External over voltage is based on atmospheric effects, where the internal voltage is based on contact on-off and ferroresonance activities.

Development of electricity market in The Great Britain– Gwyn Dolben

Electricity business in The Great Britain has witnessed a great change with the coming of competitive market since the beginning 1990, in which the state was the monopoly. There were seen dramatic transformations for the last seven years. Such transformations are ongoing with three different liberalization models developed for England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The next phase for those models is the market would reach to 24 million households by 1998, if the model works properly. It is expected that the similar developments would appear for the natural gas market as well. But full liberalization and competition is not acvieved in The Great Britain yet. So, it is wiser to get some lessons from the achievement and experiences of The Great Britain.

Get ready for energy storm .

Energy biddings will start by November 2005 after a long following period of cancellations. And the target is all biddings could be ended by the end of 2006. The energy biddings do not only cover electrical energy distribution but also hydoelectric power stations, natural gas contracts. So, it seems ideal for the companies to be active in energy business, which requires diversification and growth in energy. And many national and international groups have a keen appetite to be a part of the promising opportunities in the Turkish energy industry. It is obvious that holding companies have preparations for a long time to get the lion share in those biddings. An energy sector expert said, “None of the companies would like to miss the boat for those biddings.”

No state payables in geothermal investment

Mr. Mehmet Yüksektepe, AK Parti (Justice and Development Party) Denizli MP, prepared a notice of motion that there should not be state payables collected for five years to incite the geothermal investments. “Our geothermal resources cannot be evaluated completely due to the deficiencies in the legislations”, said Yüksektepe. Then he prepared a notice of motion on geothermal resources and mineral waters. So, the capacity would reach to the value of 31.500 Mwt (megawatt thermal) for those resources, added Yüksektepe.

New power stations to set up

New hydroelectric power stations to be set up by the private sector soon. There are 16 hydroelectric power station applications made to EMRA (EPDK-Energy Market Regulatory Authority), covering the established capacities ranging from 3,75 MW to 300 MW. EMRA will evaluate those hydroelectric power station projects and start to allocate investment licenses by the beginning of 2006. The businessmen from energy business underlined that the investor companies could not make money in the 7–8 years of that kind of investments due to borrowing demands. Following this risky period, there would be an opportunity to make high level profits, added those businessmen. “The main risk is not the excessive profits of the private industry, but the investor companies should not invest and sell the right of the public waters to different companies”, concluded those businessmen.

Preparation of electrical integration of Turkey has started

A major study on the possible electrical integration of Turkey into Europe was kicked-off on 28 September 2005 in Brussels after several years of preparation of the project. The study will be performed by UCTE (Union for the Co-ordination of Transmission of Electricity)as the body in charge of assessing any extension of the interconnected system. It is actively supported and financed by the European Commission. This project is of major political importance, especially when the political and economic integration of Turkey is under intensive political debate both within Europe and in Turkey. Martin Fuchs, President of UCTE: “In the past 50 years, electrical “enlargements” always pioneered the political and economic integration of Europe, the electricity sector being as a rule a vanguard of integration in other spheres. In this regard UCTE acts as pathmaker to European unity.”
This study is fully in line with the EU policy towards enlarging the Internal Electricity Market beyond the perimeter of the European Union. In this respect, UCTE has played a major role providing the technical bases for many interconnections.

Passive Filters – Stephan Fassbinder

It incurs very little additional effort and costs to mitigate dominant harmonics together with the compensation of fundamental reactive power, since compensation is done anyway and most compensators today already utilize de-tuning reactors. In most cases, tuning the resonant frequencies of such a system to any possible harmonic frequencies in the power system is deliberately avoided. Greater benefit can be realised by designing resonance-harmonic currents are more effectively reduced and the risk of overloading the compensator is not as high as generally assumed. A certain degree of reserve, of course, has to be installed. This is not a problem since this brings about a better cleaning effect and better energy efficiency at very little extra cost.

Harmonics currents cause more problems for the supply network than reactive currents so it is foreseeable that utilities will start to charge for harmonics dissipation as well as fundamental reactive power-it makes no sense to charge for fundamental reactive power while not doing so for harmonics.

There is no case where the installation of filtering equipment, except filters installed with or even inside a load, can be used as a convincing argument for failing to up-size neutrals or to take account of harmonics in rating cables and other equipment.

Keeping the systems impedance low is vital importance, even more so with filtering installed than where it is not. Otherwise the filter’s effects maybe adverse.

Energy World – F.Behçet Yücel / The future of energy

In his article, Mr. Behçet Yücel explains his views about the future of energy on the threshold of the 25th anniversary of Kaynak Elektrik. First he passes his experience of 13 years at Kaynak Elektrik as a columnist, which takes 52 years of his full career story. Than he underlines that it is not easy to predict future, specifically in energy business, which requires experience, deep knowledge and foresight. On the other hand, informs the reader the conditions how to be successful in energy industry. Here are the basic conditions of success: a) To conceive the change beforehand and consider long-term approaches b) To provide technical advancements in R&D, resulting in wealth for the companies and countries c) To direct the social groups and gigantic industrial corporations to achieve the change, instead of forgetting about their power caused by the changes in the system d) To champion common interests, to organize a social cooperation and to resist against corruption against individual interests. As a result, the energy panorama of the 21st century will depend on reflex of the society against the jeopardies connected to the exhaust of fossile energy resources, personal transport facilities, nuclear energy and the increase with the greenhouse gas. Within this context, humanity needs all kinds of energy resources, primarily considering energy efficiency.

Profiles from Business Life / Atilla Filiz / Telecommuting

Mr. Atilla Filiz handles telecommuting as a way of working in his article. Telecommuting can be described as a way of working based on to work far from traditional workplace with a lower cost and to transfer the work to geographically different locations. The key three factors in telecommuting are organization, location and technology. Telecommuting and new technology employment also mean organizational change.
Other reasons for telecommuting include to provide new job opportunities for the employees, to work far from head offices, traffic jam and energy saving. Employers handle telecommuting to satisfy the qualified staff easier, to decrease abseteeism rate, to use the workplaces efficiently, to decrease the costs thru renting and transportation. As for employees, they consider telecommuting to decrease the transport costs, time-saving, lesser job stres, to work independently, to balance family life and job. On the other hand, most employers believe that telecommuting is not suitable for team spirit.

Symposium / Energy Policies

Mr. Kemal Ulusaler is the representative of EMO (Chamber of Electrical Engineers) and forwards the official approach of the Chamber. As EMO, they offer to decrease the share of the energy imports and product diversification should be achieved. Other solution is solar energy, added Ulusaler. Because oil companies started invest great amounts of money on solar energy business, such as Shell, Mobil and Total.
Mr. Ahmet Oktay Kavas, the other symposium participant, underlined that Turkey has no specific energy policy either. Because energy investments are not so easy. And also the return can be achieved within 10–12 years from energy investments. So, the investors should be assured that their investments would not be interrupted. Mr. Kavas passed various examples, ranging from the government’s electricty pricing policies to build-operate-transfer modelling in energy investments.

As an example, both Turkey and the EU import various kinds of energy, such as oil, gas, solar, hydrogen and coal. And wind energy investments are newly started for both regional forces. Turkey’s no 1 missing action is not to have clear energy vision as compared to the EU, observed by Hornfeld. Another significant case is the role of bureaucracy in the Turkish energy business, said Hornfeld. He said Turkey had no any regulatory problem with the EU. But the trouble stems from the fact that bureaucracy is gawky in Turkey, not functioning properly.

Myth and reality – Azerbaijani Electrical Energy Market – (by Ilham Shaban)
The substantial and once well-developed electrical energy industrial sector in Azerbaijan is an inheritance of the former USSR. It has since fallen into a state decay and disrepair. Its infrastructure has diminished to a point where electrical engineers and technicians are having difficulties keeping the system patched together and fully functional. Much of the equipment has outlived its normal operational life. The technology and support staff is no longer appropriate to current and future consumer/industrial needs. The problem is also related to a lack of financial resources for modernization, proper maintenance, poor training, corruption and corporate management.
Presently there are 7 thermal and 5 hydro electrical power stations in Azerbaijan. Projected generating capacity of functioning power stations amounts to 23 billion k/h but in reality the reality and actual output is quite different.

—Traders and plants reversed their counters to the amount they required every 10 days thru the private entrepreneurs.
—Since there is no measurement system, the collector required USD 4 or 6 from the subscribers. If not collected that amount, he would stop supply of electricity at same day.
—The share of the state in the collections was lesser, which was mainly based on that there had a special tariff to work as a collector or engineer to be paid higher offices.
—Some plants and towns were using electricity as unrecorded subscribers.
—There was no a real evidence to know the technical losses.
—There was no sanctions against illegal electricity usage.
—Top important bureaucrats insisted not to pay the electricity invoices of their houses and workplaces.
—Most people used to think electricity was a right sent by God, so it should not be paid for it.
—Illicit lines turned into web that were taken from elevators and common lighting.
